Before we close a water-damaged repair
We check the affected area with a moisture meter and confirm that the moisture source is fixed before closing the repair. Replacing the damaged wood does not resolve the source of the water damage.
For work beyond refinishing, we confirm permit requirements with the Pittsfield Building Department. Work that opens or alters floors will probably require a permit. Carpeting, tiling and similar finish work are generally exempt, but we do not assume board replacement falls under that exemption.
Fitting and blending the replacement
We weave the replacement board into the existing floor, secure it with a flooring nailer and use trowel-applied filler for a flush repair. We then sand and finish the repaired area with the surrounding floor to blend the replacement into the existing surface.

Board replacement cost
Damaged-board replacement runs $40 to $150 per board woven in. This is per-board pricing, not a square-foot rate.

FAQs
Does Home Depot do hardwood floor refinishing?
Home Depot doesn't directly provide refinishing services, but some locations may refer local contractors. For quality assurance, seek specialized hardwood flooring contractors with proper licensing, insurance, and extensive refinishing experience. Always check reviews and ask for references. Independent specialists often provide better craftsmanship than big-box store referrals.
How can I make my hardwood floors look better without refinishing?
For a light refresh, consider screen-and-recoat ($1-3/sq ft) which lightly abrades the surface and applies new finish. Regular cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners, using felt pads under furniture, and area rugs in high-traffic zones can maintain appearance. For minor scratches, use matching wood markers or wax sticks. These methods extend time between full refinishes.
